Antonio Bajamonti

Antonio Bajamonti

Antonio Bajamonti also Antonio Baiamonti (Split also Spalato, 19 February 1822 - Split, 13 January 1891) was an ethnic Italian politician from Dalmatia. The Antonio parents were Giuseppe Bajamonti (Canceliere Petroriale di Lissa/Vis) and Elena Candido of Sebenico. He was one of the most successful mayors of Split which was/is an undisputable fact even for his political competitors.Fact|date=October 2007 He was an autonomist who rejected the unification of Dalmatia with the rest of Croatia. He was a medical doctor by profession.

He became mayor of Split/Spalato 9 January 1860, after the Count Dusan for the Autonomist Party (pro-italian) and - except for a brief interruption during the period 1864-65 - held the post for over two decades until 1880. Bajamonti was also a member of the Dalmatian Sabor (1861-91) and the Austrian Chamber of Deputies (1867-70 and 1873-79). He married 6 October 1849 with Luigia Crussevich (*1828 + March 2 1901). In 1882 the Autonomist Party of Bajamonti lost the elections, being elected for the first time in the history of the city a Croatian mayor, the lawyer Dujam Rendić-Miočević.

For many years Bajamonti enjoyed the support of Italians and Croats and in this period of relative social peace was the propeller of important public works, including the introduction of "lighting gas", building the "aqueduct" and the "hospital", creation of "technical schools", the foundation of the "Dalmatian Bank" and "society working". For his initiative Split was also equipped with a square surrounded by galleries. His most famous work was construction of the big fountain that was named later after him. Three months later after the second opening the fountain Dr. Bajamonti died. The fountain was destroyed in 1947 by communists who have considered that as a symbol of fascist domination.

Bajamonti instituted the policy Dalmatian Society (1886) and Società Accommodation Spalato (1888), until, severely indebted, died in his hometown on January 13, 1891. When he died, the information about his death was displayed in almost all the press in the Kingdom of Italy.
