CZ 99 (CZ-99) is a pistol made by Zastava Arms Co from Kragujevac, Serbia.

Variants

The caliber of the pistol is 9mm PARA, but there is also a .40SW version. The CZ 99 was imported in the US during 1990. There are newer versions of this firearm: The Zastava CZ 999, with DAO and DA/SA selector and the CZ 999 Scorpion without this selector. This model is imported in the US as ZDA 9mm pistol. The guns were generally noted for very good quality and high reliability.

At this writing, Crvena Zastava is developing new modifications of the original concept.

The fourth generation of the CZ 99 family is Zastava CZ05 which entered mass production in spring 2007. It differs from CZ 999 Scorpion by the addition of the Picatinny rail. This newest version will not be imported into the USA due to prior poor showing of this pistol.

Users

Serbian police use the CZ 99 as a service pistol, and it is also exported. Copies of the CZ 99 were manufactured in South Africa and Israel. There is also a compact version: the CZ 99G Compact.

Israeli copy is that of the CZ 99 Compact G model produced by "KSN Industries" and named "Golan". South African copy is that of the full-sized CZ 99, named TZ-99 and produced by Tressitu for a short time before the bankruptcy. In march 2008 Iraq ordered 20,000 CZ 99 from Serbia, to serve in their army and police forces.

Nomenclature Note

Although sometimes written with a dash "-" between the "CZ" and "99" (or "999"), there is no dash, just the space between "CZ" and "99"/"999" (example: CZ 99, or CZ 999). Furthermore, the newest generation of the CZ 99 family is CZ05, without the dash "-" or a space between "CZ" and "05" (according to the official Zastava Arms web site).

Name

Unrelated to Czech CZ guns, Crvena Zastava ("red flag" in Serbian) is the former name of a car and firearms manufacturer in Kragujevac, Serbia. CZ is its abbreviation.
