Mahayanam is a 1989 Malayalam film directed by Joshy, and written by Lohithadas. With Mammootty, Mukesh, and Seema appearing in lead roles, this film was a big hit at the box office.

Plot

Chandran (Mammootty) is a truck driver and Ravi ( Mukesh), the cleaner of the truck. Chandran is very affectionate towards Ravi, for whom, Chandran is life an elder brother. Chandran spends most of his leisure time in booze and women, while Ravi is busy in saving all the money, as he has got a family. One day, Ravi gets a letter from Remani (Jalaja), his wife saying that she has given birth to a baby. Excited Ravi sets out to his home with all the cash he has saved. But on way, he is killed by another truck driver who escapes with cash, making it seen like an accident. Chandran arrives at the village of Ravi, with his dead body. He finds out the miserable condition of his family and decides to stay for a few days to financially assist Remani. But during his stay, he gets involved in several social issues. He slowly joins the job of ferrying sand under Kochu Varkey, a rich businessman of the area. But, with time, he enrages Kochu Varkey (Prathapachandran) and his son Johnny Kutty (Vijayaraghavan) and invites animosity from them. Rajamma ( Seema), a bold and independent lady who makes a living by running a tea stall fells in love with Chandran, but certain unexpected incidents happen in the life of Chandran that turns everything upside down.

Trivia

• Mammootty won the 1989 State Best Actor Award for his performance in Mahayanam.
• After Mahayanam, Seema took a long break from acting. LAter she made a come back through Olympiyan Anthony Adam in 1999.
• This was the first script written by A. K. Lohithadas for Joshy. Later they joined again for Kuttettan in 1990 and Kauravar in 1992, both with Mammootty in leading roles.
