- Berthold Schwarz
Berthold Schwarz was a
Franciscan monk inFreiburg ,Germany . Born Konstantin Anklitzen, he adopted his new name when he entered themonastery . He is also sometimes known as Berthold der Schwarze (Berthold theBlack ). According tolegend , he was an alchemist and the first European to discovergunpowder , somewhere between1313 and1353 , which led directly to the creation of the firstfirearms . It is sometimes also claimed that he built or developed the firstgun s orcannon . These claims are highly disputed, as there are records of gunpowder inEurope predating this (such asRoger Bacon ), as well as much evidence from the East. As the records of his monastery were destroyed, it is difficult to pinpoint a date for his discovery, or even his death. There are several stories about how and when he died, some involving anexplosion , but there is little evidence to support one over another. His legend is most pervasive in Germany and in1853 , amonument was erected to him in Freiburg.External links

*Berthold the Black is not the inventor of "black powder", but instead, was credited with creating the first use for black powder by inventing the gun. His epitaph read "here lies Berthold the Black, the most abominable of humans, who by his invention has brought misery to the rest of humanity." Roger Bacon is most widely believed to be the inventor of black powder, not Berthold the Black, even though the explosive substance bears Berthold Blacks name.
