- Laeaeans
The Laeaeans were a
Paionian tribe who in the 4th century BC lived adjacent to theAgrianes , another Paionian tribe, along the upper course of theStrymon river, at the western edge ofThrace . They were not incorporated into theOdrysian state or the Paionian state, remaining an independent tribe outside the borders of those kingdoms. According toThucydides , the Laeaeans, along with the Agrianes, the ThracianDii , and other tribes, joinedSitalkes in his unsuccessful campaign againstPerdiccas II of Macedon . [Thucydides, 2.96.] Thecoins issued by the Laeaeans are judged to be of crude workmanship, and seem to be imitations of finer minted coins issued by other neighboring Paionian tribes such as the Derrones. A typical coin bears the inscription LAIAI ("Laeaeans") on the obverse, and aPegasus in a double linear square on the reverse. It is unclear whether or not the Laeaeans were conquered by Philip II orAlexander III of Macedon , although their neighbours are recorded by historians such asArrian as client kings. [Arrian. "Anabasis", 1.16.3.]References
