Elisabeth Irwin High School is a coeducational, private secondary school in New York City. The division of Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School is regarded as one of the top private schools in New York City. [1] The school as a whole was founded in 1921, and the high school division was added in the 1940's. It is named after Elisabeth Irwin, the founder of the school. "Elisabeth Irwin High School" is a co-ed private school in New York City, USA. It is located in the West Village of Manhattan. The school is divided into Lower School (K-4), Middle School (5-8), which are part of Little Red and the Upper School (9-12), which is part of Elisabeth Irwin High School. There is a total of approximately 220 students enrolled in grades K-12, with about 20 to 48 students per grade.

Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, who was a remarkable and influential educator, did much to transform American education in the early part of the twentieth century. Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School consider themselves to be a leader in progressive education. The Lower and Middle schools are located on 272 6th Ave, while the high school is located on 40 Charlton St. in Manhattan.

Academics

LREI believes in progressive education. Much of the students' learning is done through experimentation, projects, and field trips, as opposed to the more traditional direct instruction. As a further example, high-school students have art every day. (These art classes include: Dance, Drama, Music, Digital Film making, Photography, Studio, and Graphic Arts).

College Placement

The five most frequently attended colleges and universities for Elisabeth Irwin graduates from 2002-2006 were: New York University (10), Columbia University (8), University of Pennsylvania (7), Princeton University (7) and Yale (6).

Physical facilities

A separate building, the "The Thompson St. Gym" on Thompson St., has facilities for physical education and athletics. LREI's sports teams include soccer (co-ed), volleyball (girls), cross country (co-ed), basketball (jv & varsity boys & girls), winter and spring track (co-ed), tennis (co-ed), softball (girls), baseball (boys), and the newest additions: the bowling team (co-ed) known as the EI Strikers.Elisabeth Irwin's school/team colors are Red and White.
