Catherine Zelazowska

Catherine Zelazowska

Catherine Zelazowska (1460-1540) was a Polish woman who converted to Judaism. She was the widow of an alderman of Krakow, and at the time when, influenced by the Bible, Polish Christendom was divided into different sects, she followed the example of the daughter of Nicholas Radzi and embraced Judaism. In 1540 Piotr Gamrat, Bishop of Krakow, condemned her to be burned. Because of her willingness to convert to Judaism, she was heralded as a martyr.
