The USS "Overton County" (LST-1074) was an sclass|LST-542|tank landing ship built for the
United States Navy duringWorld War II . Named forOverton County, Tennessee , she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name.Originally laid down as LST-1074 on
24 February 1945 by the Bethlehem Hingham Shipyards, Inc. ofHingham, Massachusetts ; launched27 March ,1945 ; and commissioned21 April 1945 with Lieutenant John Gay in command. After a shakedown cruise in theChesapeake Bay , LST–1074 got underway6 June forPearl Harbor via thePanama Canal . After unloading her cargo of LCT sections and cargo nets at Pearl Harbor and conducting various operations in the islands, she took on troops and vehicles of the 5th Marine Division and of the 302nd Naval Construction Battalion with pontoon gear and on29 August got underway for Sasebo,Kyūshū ,Japan . On2 October she arrived inSubic Bay ,Luzon ,Philippine Islands and operated in the WesternPacific until returning toSan Francisco 7 January 1946 . After operation on the West Coast she was placed out of commission in reserve4 September 1946 . Named USS "Overton County" (LST-1074) on1 July 1955 , she was struck from theNaval Vessel Register 1 November 1958 .Her final fate is unknown.
