Julius is the father from the sitcom, "Everybody Hates Chris." Julius is played by actor, Terry Crews. The show is based on the teenage years of Emmy Award winning comedian, Chris Rock. The Julius character is loosely based on Chris Rock's actual father, Julius Rock.

Character Background

On the show, which is set in the 1980s, Julius is a thirty-five year old man who was born in New York City, around 1950. He works two jobs. One of which is delivering newspapers. His second job is as the landlord in the apartment he and his family live in. He collects rent from-- and repairs household fixtures for the tenants living in the apartment. Julius is a husband and father. He runs his household with his intimidating wife, Rochelle, over their three children, Chris, Drew, and Tonya. In 1982, Julius and his family moved out of the projects to a four-bedroom apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. Julius and his family reside in a rough lower-class neighborhood filled with thieves, gangs, criminals, etc. Julius and his family all live on a tight budget. This is why Julius must work multiple jobs for a living and is such a tightfisted workaholic. He has loads of ridiculous ways to save money. In fact, to keep from spending too much, Julius will make himself along with his entire family suffer, often to the point of him appearing outrageous and insane. In one episode for example, no matter how deep of an emergency he and his family were in, Julius wouldn't allow his wife to get their insurance company involved. As another example, no matter how sick he and his family were becoming, Julius wouldn't allow Rochelle to get a doctor involved. Though his money-related worries normally causes him to appear as if he couldn't care less about himself or his loved ones, Julius acts the way he does to protect them all financially. Being poor and bad off as it is, Julius doesn't want his family to struggle even worse. Already working two jobs and having a wife who tends to quit her jobs, Julius is somewhat justified in his extreme behavior. Other than his inconsideration and quirks, typically as a result of being a worrywart provider, Julius is a caring, soft-spoken, and even-tempered man. As the very tall, sturdy, hardworking man of the house, Julius has his very own living room chair, and sits at the head of the dining room table where he and his family always eat together.

Julius & Rochelle

Julius and his wife, Rochelle, were married around the late 1960s. Julius and his wife have a strong marriage and show that they care for each other a great deal. However, Rochelle has many habits that Julius would rather live without. For instance, one of Julius' pet peeves are Rochelle's long-lasting ranting complaints over whatever has frustrated her throughout her day. In episode thirty-four, entitled "Everybody Hates Hall monitors", Julius' showed that he was growing weary of Rochelle's constant complaints about her new job, which led to a conflict between him and Rochelle. In fact, because of his wife's intimidating personality, Julius makes many efforts to hide much of his behavior he knows his wife may have a problem with. One example of this is Julius' pretending to be fast asleep when Rochelle bursted into one of her complaints about an issue regarding her hair at the beauty salon. As another example, Julius sneaked off to work after his wife instructed him to stay home to get his rest, since it was his day off. Julius even kept the fact that he had been using a credit card from his wife, for fifteen years. However, Rochelle can be just as sneaky towards Julius when it comes to money-related issues. In one episode, Rochelle kept the fact that she was hiding money of her own from Julius. In another episode, Rochelle wasn't using the food stamps that Julius instructed her to use. Being the levelheaded, even-tempered one as between himself and Rochelle, Julius is rarely the one who becomes upset with his wife like Rochelle becomes with him. Though he realizes how his wife can sometimes become unreasonably upset with him, Julius always does his best to make up with her because he loves her so much. In making up with his wife, Julius often makes an effort to hug and kiss Rochelle but is always rejected by her the first time he tries.

Julius & Chris

Julius and Rochelle had their first child, Chris Rock (protagonist--based on Chris Rock), in 1969. Like all of his kids, Julius is always there to have a talk with Chris when Chris is feeling down or confused about something. In these moments, Julius offers Chris guidance and advice. Though most of Julius' urgings and recommendations are always challenging to accomplish and require the utmost effort out of Chris, it's only because he wants Chris to be strong and able to handle himself in trying situations. One example of this is when Chris was running for eighth-grade class president, and Julius tells him that no matter what he does, he can't quit. Despite going through with his father's demanding suggestions because he looks up to him, Chris always ends up unsuccessful in the end. Julius often criticizes the route Chris took, even though it was his own advice that Chris was following. Julius tends to be more lenient in his parenting and once even allowed Chris to parallel park his car. Often however, Julius doesn't even have a choice but to be the lenient parent, as he does things just as wrong as Chris and the rest of his children half the time they do something wrong. For example, in the episode entitled "Everybody Hates Gambling", Julius was caught gambling right along with Chris after Rochelle instructed them not to. In another episode, Chris was caught with a Playboy magazine at school. It was a magazine that actually belonged to Julius.

Julius & Drew

Julius' and Rochelle had their second child, Drew Rock, in 1971. Being more independent than Tonya and more successful than Chris, Drew is the child that Julius is seen giving advice to and helping out the least. However, like the rest of his children, whenever Drew is down, Julius is always there to make him feel better and give him the right suggestions. As with his two other children, Julius is more lenient in his parenting towards Drew as well. Julius and Drew have a lot in common, as they both have the same interests and often find themselves in the same positions. They both enjoy sports, watching TV, and both often are often in the doghouse together. Right along with Drew many times, Julius is trying to keep certain matters behind his wife's back to evade getting into trouble with her. Though while Julius has to put up with his wife, Drew has to put up with his sister. Julius once even bribed his middle son so that he'd keep his mouth shut about a matter he was keeping from Rochelle. Julius and Drew rarely have an issue with each other and behave as if they're more of an equal standing to each other for the most part. However, Drew sometimes becomes uneasy when he's done something wrong against his father directly. For instance, Drew once damaged his father's chair and thought he might be in very deep trouble with him.

Julius & Tonya

Julius and Rochelle had their third child, Tonya Rock, in 1973. Tonya is Julius' only daughter, as well as his youngest child. Out of all of his children, Julius is most protective over Tonya. On one episode, it was even proven that he was overprotective of his only daughter. In a humorous clip, showing an exaggeration of Julius' overprotection of Tonya, he's seen ready to tear into a very young, adolescent boy who is merely playing with Tonya. Though Tonya hasn't hung out with many boys being so young, Julius has already shown that he is overprotective of her and will have an issue with it when she does. Tonya is also the only family member that can get anything she wants out of Julius. All she has to do is make a face that quickly causes Julius to quit refusing. Julius is always there for Tonya when she is saddened by anything, and always knows what to say and how to help out to make her feel better. Whether its because of Drew's messing with her or not being able to accomplish something, he's always their to make her feel better and help her out. Though when Julius was in trouble with Rochelle, his only daughter blackmailed him out of ten dollars.

Family

* Julius has a very successful and talented younger brother named Louis (played by Wayne Brady), whom he's very jealous of. Julius' relationship with Louis is very much like the relationship between Chris and Drew. It was revealed that Julius was jealous of his younger brother, when Louis visited for Thanksgiving. In preparation for his visit, Julius tried to make it so that he would receive all the attention and compliments. However, Louis effortlessly received all the attention, as he impressed and had a blast with all of Julius' visitors. Because of this, Julius felt left out and angry at his younger brother. Julius eventually apologized for his behavior and came to terms with his older brother.

* Confirmed in the series', Julius gets along with Rochelle's mother, her father, and her three sisters. However, Rochelle's obnoxious, freeloading older brother, Michael (played by Earthquake), is another story entirely. Michael visits to celebrate special occasions with his family, but most of his visits take place when he has no place to stay. Michael has no place of his own and still lives with his mother, Maxine. Though Rochelle doesn't allow him to stay without going to Julius and pleading him first, Julius eventually allows it and regrets allowing it after awhile. Michael is very much a pest, particularly towards Julius. He does such things as wear Julius' clothes, sits in Julius' chair, and has even given Julius outdated tickets to a sports game. He also calls out "BIG MAN", whenever referring to Julius. At one point, Julius was so sick of his brother-in-law that he threw him out of his house.

Habits

* Julius' favorite song is "I Will Survive". When hearing this song, he can be seen singing and acting just as rowdily as Rochelle when she does her terrible singing.

* Julius often is seen wearing his work uniform even when at home.

* Julius always knows the exact dollar amount of anything that's been spent.

*Julius has very poor eating habits, which is likely the cause of his gout and hypertension.

*In a season three episode Chris (the narrator) seemed to suggest Julius is now deceased ("If my father were alive to see the price of gas today, it'd kill 'im!"). Chris Rock's real father died in 1989.

Trivia

* In the season one episode "Everybody Hates Sausage", Julius wears a shirt from "The Overlook Hotel", which is a reference to the Overlook Hotel in "The Shining".
