binomial_authority ="Teviornis" is a recently described
genus of prehistoricbird . It lived in theMaastrichtian , during the LateCretaceous , some 68 million years ago. It appears to belong to theAnseriformes , which includesduck s and geese, but it is not considered to be a direct ancestor of them. Itsfossil remains were found in theNemegt Formation of southernMongolia . Only thetype species "Teviornis gobiensis" is known to date.Despite the rather fragmentary remains, the genus seems to be quite unequivocally a member of the
Presbyornithidae , as supported by bothcladistic and qualitative analyses. These were stilt-leggedwaterfowl which are nowadays entirelyextinct but flourished during thePaleogene . Together with the famous "Vegavis " fromAntarctica , nearly half the world away, "Teviornis" demonstrates that the relatives of today's waterfowl already were widespread and highlyapomorph ic by the end of theMesozoic .External links
