- Castellan, Pembrokeshire
Castellan is a hamlet and parish in
Pembrokeshire ,Wales . It is situated in the north of the county on the slopes of Frenni Fawr, 2 km north ofCrymych . It was originally a chapelry of the parish ofPenrydd , and constitutes a manor originally owned by theKnights Hospitaller based atSlebech . The ruins of their chapel are still visible. The parish includes part of the village of Blaen-ffos coord|51|59|58|N|4|38|19|W. The northern part of the parish is now in the community ofBoncath , and the southern part is in Crymych community.The name is an archaic Welsh word meaning "little castle" [Charles, B. G., "The Placenames of Pembrokeshire", National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1992, ISBN 0-907158-58-7, pp 354-5] . The area has always been Welsh-speaking.
The parish had an area of 373 Ha. Its census populations were: 82 (1801): 171 (1851): 171 (1901): 115 (1951): 162 (1981).
The percentage of Welsh speakers was 100 (1891): 100 (1931): 100 (1971).
