Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School (founded 1960) is a mixed high school situated in Suva, the capital of the Fiji Islands. It is a school which is named after Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian political leader. The school is acknowledged as having a strong academic history, and for producing some of the more high profile scholars in Fiji and the surrounding region.

Background

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School is a sister school of Nehru Primary School, Mahatma Gandhi Primary School and Indira Gandhi Memorial School, all of which are managed by the Gujarat Society of Fiji. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School is a progressive, co-educational secondary school that provides high quality education to its students from forms three to seven. Since 1960, the school has attained many academic, cultural and sporting achievements. It provides a very balanced approach to student learning where emphasis is placed on the holistic development of each child.

This is evident in the school’s vision “Nurturing the whole person through the head, heart and hands”. Special emphasis is placed on moral values and character development as well as citizenship education.

The school focuses on developing the talents of students in a supportive, safe and inclusive environment. The diversity in student population and the opportunity this provides to enhance cross-cultural understanding is regarded as one of its strengths.

Named after Mahatma Gandhi, the school community emulates and practises Gandhian philosophy. The school is a place of learning where we expand our capacity to create and achieve the results we truly desire. The school is a learning community where all learn to learn, learn to do things and learn to live together. Mainstream academic as well as technical subjects are offered at the school. The teaching staff are committed, dedicated and highly qualified, and provide educational leadership through their participation in professional associations and various educational work groups.

Collaboration over individualism is practised so that a climate of trust develops where students and teachers support each other and pool as well as share resources. The school is a centre of learning where desired changes are encouraged and supported by all. It inculcates a culture of reading, research, collaborative planning, teamwork, creativity and critical thinking. We believe in themes involving interdependence, mutuality, cooperation and dedication to enhance learning.
