Responsible Education About Life Act

The Responsible Education About Life Act (or REAL Act) (USBill|110|S.|972 and USBill|110|H.R.|1653, identical) is a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives on March 22, 2007. Sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), with 12 cosponsors, and Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Christopher Shays (R-CT), with 75 cosponsors, the bill is currently in committee.

The bill would provide federal funding for comprehensive sex education programs in schools. Currently, only abstinence-only-until-marriage education receives federal funding. The bill would provide funding for programs which include information about both abstinence and contraception and condoms.
