Wellington College Belfast (commonly Wellington College or WCB) is a co-educational grammar school [ [http://www.wellingtoncollegebelfast.org/aims.php Aims | Wellington College ] ] located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The current principal is Mrs Heather Reid. The school was formed when, in 1990, the all boys Annadale Grammar School and the all girls Carolan Grammar School merged to become a single coeducational grammar school [ [http://www.wellingtoncollegebelfast.org/history.php 20 statements about the college | Wellington College ] ] . The school is named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.

Uniform

General

The Wellington blazer takes its blue colour from that of the British Army during the 19th century [ [http://kildare.ie/Monasterevin-Historical-Society/hussars.htm Hussars ] ] which was the uniform worn by the Duke of Wellington during his service. All pupils are required to wear the blazer along with a plain white shirt and regulation school tie (green with red and white stripes}. All boys wear dark grey/black trousers and socks with plain black shoes; an optional school jumper, grey with a green and red band at the collar, may be worn in the winter months. Girls in the junior school, years 8 to 12 (or first to fifth form), wear a blue skirt, with blue socks (or dark blue tights) and plain black shoes. They also have the choice of wearing a jumper but one which is blue with the same collar as the boys. In the senior school, years 13 and 14 (lower and upper sixth form), the uniform for girls changes with the blue skirt, socks (or tights) and jumpers becoming grey.

Physical education

Boys P.E. uniform consists of a blue t-shirt with the school's logo, a cockatrice and the 'una discamus' motto, displayed on the left breast, with white shorts and socks and plain coloured trainers. Girls P.E. uniform consists of a red shirt, again with the school's logo on the left breast, a blue skirt or shorts, blue socks and plain coloured trainers.

Games

Boys Games uniform is a horizontally striped, red and white, Jersey worn with blue shorts, blue socks and plain coloured trainers. Girls uniform is the same as the girls P.E. uniform; a red shirt, blue skirt/shorts, blue socks and plain coloured trainers.

chool day

From Monday to Thursday the school day begins at 8:45 UTC and ends at 15:20 UTC. On Fridays the day ends early at 2:45pm UTC [ [http://www.wellingtoncollegebelfast.org/about/a-day.php College Day and Year | Wellington College ] ] . The day is split into nine periods, of thirty five minutes, with a twenty minute registration in the morning (08:45 UTC - 09:05 UTC), a twenty minute break (10:15 UTC to 10:40 UTC) and a thirty-five minute lunch (12:25 UTC - 13:00 UTC for years 8 - 10 and 13:00 - 13:35 for yars 11 - 14). On a Friday registration is replaced by an assembly, which is held in the school Sports Hall, and is attended by the entire school (pupils meet at 08:45 UTC at the Classroom in which their first class will take place where they leave their school bags and wait for their teacher to escort them to the hall). In addition to this full school assembly there are also year assemblies (attended only by the pupils and the form teachers of a particular year) held, for years 8 - 11, on Mondady, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. A class will typically last for 35 minutes (a single period) or for 1 hour and 10 minutes (two periods).

Wellington offers a number of extracurricular activies to its pupils. These normally run after school, or during lunch time, and are generally overseen by members of the teaching or library staff. In sosme cases a specialist in a particular subject may be invited to take a course [ [http://wellingtoncollegebelfast.org/extra-curricular/music/guitar-group.php Guitar Group | Wellington College ] ] [http://wellingtoncollegebelfast.org/sport/index.php Sports | Wellington College ] ] (e.g. In January 2008 Neil Best and Rob Dewey helped with rugby training and hosted a question and answer session). Activities include, but are not limited to, a Scripture Union, a Science Club, an Art Club and a range of musical activities such as choirs and bands etc.. The school also takes part in the The Duke of Edinburgh scheme allowing students over fifteen years old to enter for a 'Silver Award' and those over sixteen to enter for a 'Gold Award.'
