Javier Orman

Javier Orman (1984-) is a Uruguayan violinist currently residing in the United States. A member of the Terranova Piano Trio, his performances have been called "exciting, vibrant" ("La Industria", Peru) and "passionate, exuberant" ("klassicaa.com").

Javier began his studies of the violin in Uruguay at the age of four years old with Professor Ludmilla Cavallaro. Juventudes Musicales del Uruguay awarded him category “A” in its annual soloist competition in 1998, which led to performances in some of the country’s most prestigious auditoriums.

He obtained Bachelor degrees (Magna cum Laude) in Music and Mathematics from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, where he studied under Professor Lee Chin Siow with a full scholarship. He is now a Graduate student of Professor Yehonatan Berick at the University of Michigan. Besides receiving a full-tuition scholarship from the School of Music, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has awarded him a Fellowship.

Javier was the winner of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association soloist competitions in 2002 and 2005. He has received numerous awards from the College of Charleston for his academic achievements in Music and Mathematics. Also, he has performed as a soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Metropolitan Civic Orchestra, the College of Charleston Chamber Orchestra, the El Salvador National Youth Orchestra, the Piccolo Spoleto Conservatory Orchestra and the Trujillo Symphony Orchestra.

In 2004, Javier co-founded the Terranova Piano Trio (with pianist Giuliana Contreras and cellist Yun Hao Jiang), which has received great critical acclaim. The group toured El Salvador, Peru, Argentina and Uruguay in 2006 with recitals and performances of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. At its return to the United States, the trio gave several recitals with an all-Latin-American program and won the South Carolina Music Teachers Association chamber music competition.

Javier has been a member of the violin faculty at Charleston Academy of Music and Ashley Hall in South Carolina. He also dedicates his time to Orchestral Conducting, having studied with Federico Garcia Vigil and Lorenzo Muti. Recently, he conducted the College of Charleston Chamber Orchestra in its season’s final concert.

In the area of Mathematics, Javier has received the Silver Medal at the Olimpíada Nacional de Matemática (Uruguay) and an Honorable Mention at the 2001 edition of the Olimpíada Iberoamericana de Matemática. The College of Charleston prized him with the Ewa Wojcicka Award “as the outstanding mathematics major in recognition of superior achievement in mathematics” in 2005.
