Stratford Sub Castle

Stratford Sub Castle

Stratford Sub Castle (otherwise Stratford sub Castle) in Wiltshire, England was a separate village but is nowadays a suburb of the city of Salisbury that lies next to, and south of, the ancient abandoned settlement of Old Sarum and north of its city centre.

It is within the current city boundaries and is approximately 20 miles from Southampton.

The oldest building in the area is the church. It dates back to the 13th Century, and is still used as a church today. Since Stratford Sub Castle cannot expand east/westbound, as Old Sarum is to its east and the River Avon to its west, it has become a linear settlement.

Before his conversion to Catholicism the hymnist Edward Caswall served as its curate.
