R&B trio. Comprised of members , Smoke E. Digglera, Black, and the late Static Major, Playa is best known for their1998 hit album, "Cheers 2 U", produced by longtime collaboratorTimbaland . Static is notable for being a successful songwriter of hit singles and album tracks for artists such asGinuwine ,Aaliyah ,Truth Hurts , and Brandy.History
Early years
The three members of Playa all originate from
Louisville, Kentucky , and styled their act afterR&B starsJodeci . After impressing Jodeci memberDeVante Swing by imprompu a cappella versions of Jodeci songs backstage after a Jodeciconcert , Playa was signed to DeVante'sSwing Mob label withElektra Records . Other members of Swing Mob were young hopefuls such asMissy Elliott ,Timbaland & Magoo ,Ginuwine ,Tweet , and Renee Anderson. By1996 , most of the Swing Mob artists--Playa included--had left DeVante for better luck elsewhere. They participated in the production of Jodeci'sThe Show, The After Party, The Hotel album in 1995Discography
