Jorma J. Rissanen (born 1932 in
Finland ) is an information theorist, known for inventing thearithmetic coding technique oflossless data compression , and theminimum description length principle.An
IBM researcher since 1960, Rissanen received hisPh.D. from theHelsinki University of Technology in 1965. Retired from IBM, he is now professoremeritus ofTampere University of Technology , and a fellow ofHelsinki Institute for Information Technology . He was awarded theIEEE Richard W.
