The Swansea Urban Area is an area of land in
Wales , UK defined by defined by theOffice for National Statistics for population monitoring purposes. It is an urbanconurbation and is not coterminous with the City and County ofSwansea and discludes the urban area ofGorseinon within the county boundaries. It conists of the urban area centred aroundSwansea city centre ; theSwansea Valley between and includingClydach andPontardawe ; and includesNeath andPort Talbot which lay outside the county boundaries.The total population of the area in 2001 was 270,506, making it the the 25th largest urban area in the UK in 2001 [http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_compendia/fom2005/03_FOPM_UrbanAreas.pdf] and the second largest in Wales.
