Pant (surname)

Pant (surname)

Pant or Panta is part of a compound of North Indian or Nepalese surnames of people with a Hindu Brahmin background. The Pant surname is taken from pandit and was coined in Maharashtra in a very early time.

People with "Pant" in their surname belong to the Kumauni Brahmin caste and come originally from Uttarakhand and Nepal. The ancestors of these families migrated from the western India, particularly from the Konkan area of Maharashtra to their current Himalayan home.

Pant is also frequently used by Deshastha Brahmins. Here, Mr Jaidev and Diwakar Rao were the first Pant ancestors. Pant is used in Maha as a suffix like Rao, in Kumauni Pant is used as a surname. The names of Jhansi Ki Rani (Moro Pant), Veer Savarkar, K.B Hedegwar, Shivaji spritual guru Ramdas, and first peshwa of shivaji, all use the Pant title. B.C.Z. Pant is a symbol of Brahmin in Maharashtra while Rao can be used by any one.
