George Costakis George Kostaki's priceless collection of Russian avant-garde artwork consists of thousands of Russian avant-garde pieces, including works by Malevic, the founder of the "supremacist" school, Tatlin the founder of "constructivism", Papova, Chagall, Rozanova, Zverev, the founder of "Russian expressionism" , Matiushin, Kandinsky and many others. The collection comprises paintings, sketches, engraved manuscripts and documents.
Art aficionado George Kostakis, a Moscow resident of Greek descent, amassed his collection between 1930 and 1960 through the exchange of works by Western artists for paintings dating from the period of 1910-1930 by then unknown Russian avant-garde artists.
The Greek state recently formally acquired part of the collection with the signing of an agreement between the Thessaloniki State Museum of Modern Art and representatives of the late collector's granddaughter, Aliki Kostaki, through a 14 billion-drachma purchase deal.
