"Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry" is a peer-reviewed academic journal which covers biotechnology, with a focus on diagnostics, therapeutics and human healthcare. Topics covered include new technologies for the processing of natural and recombinant biological molecules, novel expression systems, new cell-culture and fermentation methods, healthcare contributions related to the commercialization of novel medicines, process engineering aspects of new therapeutic proteins, antibodies and genes, tissue engineering, stem-cell and cell therapeutics, nanotechnology, therapeutic proteins and enzymes and novel diagnostic products

"Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry" is currently published monthly online by Portland Press Ltd, London, UK, a wholly owned publishing subsidiary of the Biochemical Society, on behalf of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology [ [http://www.iubmb.unibe.ch/index.php?id=27 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry] (accessed 18 October 2007)] from editorial offices in London, UK and La Jolla, USA.

History

Previously called the "Journal of Applied Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry" (1979-1985) (ISSN 0161-7354) was originally published by Academic Press and assumed its present title in 1986 [http://locatorplus.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=2&ti=1,2&SC=Title&SA=Journal%20of%20applied%20biochemistry&PID=d5vC2DCkNE4MYmZa945M4h3mh7&SEQ=20071024065218&SID=2 NLM LocatorPlus: Journal of applied biochemistry] (accessed 24 October 2007)] . In 1993 its publication was taken over by Portland Press Ltd [ [http://locatorplus.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&v1=1&ti=1,1&Search_Arg=8609465&Search_Code=0359&CNT=20&SID=1 NLM LocatorPlus: Biotechnology and applied biochemistry] (accessed 24 October 2007)] , and at that time its Editor-in-Chief was the late Peter Campbell of University College London, UK. During the period 1996-2002 its Editor-in-Chief was Roger Lundblad (formerly of Baxter Biotech, Duarte, USA). Its Editor-in-Chief since 2003 has been Parviz Shamlou (Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis, USA).

Originally publishing papers of a general applied-biochemistry nature, the journal has in latter years narrowed its scope to focus on diagnostics, therapeutics and human healthcare.

Modern journal

Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is published monthly online, and as nine print issues per year, in three volumes. Content from 1998 is available to subscribers online in PDF and HTML formats, with papers from 2005 also being available in an enhanced full-text format (EESI-View).

Portland Press Ltd has developed an innovative way of viewing journal articles online called Enhanced Electronic Serials Interface-View (EESI-View). EESI-View employs a novel 3-frame approach to solve the frustrations of reading journal articles online. It enables the reader to view text, figures and author information at the same time, analogous to the printed page, with easy automatic resizing of frames, simple navigation, linking, roll-overs to authors’ affiliations and references, all customizable to suit the reader.

In 2008 Portland Press Ltd launched Opt2Pay, a new pay-to-publish option, whereby authors who publish within Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry can now choose to pre-pay to make the final authoritative version of their journal articles freely available immediately on publication, ensuring the journal is compliant with the publishing mandates of The Wellcome Trust, MRC, CRUK, BBSRC, etc. The journal is also compliant with the NIH mandate – where authors may deposit their accepted peer-reviewed manuscripts in PubMed Central on acceptance for public release 12 months after publication.

The journal's 2007 impact factor was 1.269 [ [http://www.babonline.org/bab/news/default.htm "Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry" news page] (accessed 16 July 2008)] , and it was ranked 94 out of 138 journals in the ISI Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology category. "Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry" is indexed by Dechema, BIOSIS, CAB International, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Elsevier BIOBASE/CABS, Elservier EMBASE, Excerpta Medica, MEDLINE, International Food Information Service, IFIS Publishing and ISI (Institute for Scientific Information).
