Tinakori Hill

Tinakori Hill is a hill in Wellington, New Zealand.

History

The Hill got its name in a most interesting way. In Maori, Kori means no and Tina is a transliteration of dinner. Therefore the rough translation is No Dinner. This name was achieved as it was once a steep road that horses struggled to pull carts up. One day a cart separated from its horse and rolled off down the hill. It was in the evening and the person who was pulling the cart simply said "Tina Kori" (or "No Dinner"). The name then stuck, and from then on it was called Tinakori.
