Álora is a town of southern
Spain in the province of Málaga; 17 m. W.N.W. ofMálaga , on the right bank of the riverGuadalhorce , and on the Córdoba-Málaga railway. Pop. (1900) 10,525, (2002) 12,538.The town of Alora crowns a small hill over the Guadalhorce river. The castle's towers, once vigil to the comings and goings of men and inland merchandise, in the Bobastro domains, out stand over the city, which shelters discretely between two small headlands and the powerful Hacho mountain (559 m.)From a distance, it is a typical
pueblo blanco ; a whitewashed village nestled between three rocky spurs topped by the ruins of a magnificent castle which has an interesting history. Alora's castle was first built by thePhoenicia ns and subsequently expanded under Roman rule. In the 5th century the castle was virtually destroyed by theVisigoth s, only to be rebuilt under theMoors ; remnants of this era still remain, namely the decorative steel door and the traditional Arabmirador References
