Podanur

Podanur is a town six kilometres Southeast of the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. Its history goes back to the creation of a major railway station and colony during British rule. The station has lost its importance after the main railway station was built at Coimbatore. However, it is still a significant junction and few trains that don't go to Coimbatore stop at Podanur. The town is now becoming an important suburb of Coimbatore. Many white and blue collar workers from the town work in Coimbatore. Other towns surrounding Podanur are Kuruchi and Vellalore. Golden nagar is a part of Podanur which has its well renowned friends Club. Many employees working in VWR International, LLC resides here.

Excellent climate

While the rest of the South Indian plains swelter during summer, Podanur benefits from a cool breeze (at least during the nights) from the Palghat gap. This makes Podanur a town with an excellent climate. It got the nickname 'Poor Man's Ooty' due to its excellent climate.

Places of interest

The Kari motor speedway and the Coimbatore golf course are at Chettipalayam near Podanur. The Eachanari temple on the Pollachi road is three kilometres from Podanur.

The Garbage Dump

Coimbatore's garbage is being dumped on the outskirts of Podanur on the way to Chettipalayam causing serious air and water pollution to the area. During the warm months plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the dump during some evenings. The smoke sometimes reaches as far as the Podanur market. People wonder why Coimbatore cannot find waste land elsewhere to dump its garbage. A decent residential town with good climate is chosen instead.

Getting There

Podanur is well connected to Coimbatore by trains and buses. Many auto rickshaws and taxis are found travelling to and from Podanur to Coimbatore and other surrounding towns. A part of Podanur is not well connected by buses, Golden Nagar is a example. Friends Call taxi is based out of Podanur. The nearest airport is the Coimbatore Airport
