Street Sheet Canada

Street Sheet Canada

Street Sheet Canada is a street newspaper founded in 1994 by Rodney Graham. The street paper is in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The paper is available in Winnipeg, and was available in Saskatoon, and Regina but no more. It is not connected with Street Sheet in San Francisco, however it has similar content. Graham, a freelancer in Winnipeg, named it after the San Francisco Street Sheet because he admired the content (especially the editorials of the former editor) of Street Sheet in California. Street Sheet Canada is designed so that the vendors themselves can run it. By fall of 2007, unfortunately, and due mainly to complaints by merchants in Winnipeg, very few vendors remain and there are none now in Saskatchewan (Selling Street Sheet Canada). Mr Graham's health is not good -- and a lack of volunteers in Winnipeg means that Street Sheet Canada will probably not last.

It should be added -- Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada was the very first city in Canada to pass a law against 'squeegeeing' (Washing car windows at intersections in Canada for spare change). Graham began his writing career as a 'defender' of these unpopular people. 'Squeegee kids' are youth who have left their homes because of disfunction/abuse (And are 'technically' really homeless -- not just rebellious kids who hang out on the st periodically only) 'Real' squeegee kids wash car windows at intersections for spare change. They also usually travel frequently because they are harassed wherever they go by merchants and autorities. More recently Graham has been the 'defender' of modern day hobos - who also often squeegee wherever they go.

An interesting rumor: Regarding Rod's health/lifespan and possible retirement, there may be a hint of these two events happening quite soon in the title of a recent profile article about him - it was titled 'The Last Great Adventure' appearing in University of Manitoba's The Manitoban.

Yes, it is rumoured he has chronic lung problems and a degenerative main aorta. The lung problem from a rare bacteria he got from drinking water from a large mud puddle in a train yard in Winnipeg while hopping from Prince Rupert to Halifax in 2005, or from a couple of other ditches. Didn't want to get off in Winnipeg (Where he lives). The allusion to 'last adventure' would be possibly reffering to his recent obsession with hobos, drifters , and train hopping and the possible terminal illness(s). Having been a early response forest fire fighter/smoke jumper, activist and journalist, has had a life of adventure. He has also recently begun his NO FLYER campaign again which he had done in the mid 90s.
