footnotes = The County of Regenstein was a mediæval statelet of theHoly Roman Empire .The first documentary mention of Regenstein was 1162, with Count Conrad, son of
Poppo I, Count of Blankenburg , of the House ofReginbodonen [Reginbodonen de icon] .The most renowned count was Albert II (
1310 –49) [Albrecht II. von Regenstein de icon] , who in the 30 years of the14th century was frequently in dispute with the leaders of the surrounding towns, theBishop of Halberstadt and the abbess of Quedlinburg. These tales were romanticised in theballad "The Robber Count" ( _de. Der Raubgraf) byGottfried August Bürger and composed byJohann Philipp Kirnberger and the novel of the same name by Julius Wolff [Julius Wolff de icon] .In the
15th century the comital family acquired nearby Blankenburg castle; Regenstein Castle lapsed and was left to ruin. The last scion of the comital family, Count John Ernest, died in1599 .Notes
