Vero Beach High School , where he got his start in his American football career, earning the Indian River County Athlete of the Century Award. Parris graduated fromVero Beach High School , in 1969, and went on to play atFlorida State University . He married his high school sweetheart, Bobbie Adkins in 1969, and gave birth to three children, son, Matthew Norman (born June 6, 1971), son Gary Thomas (G.T.), Jr., and daughter, Kelly. He currently resides in Vero Beach, FL, with his wife, Bobbie.Parris was also involved in politics. He served on the Vero Beach City Council from 1984-1986, and recently ran for the
Indian River County, Florida Commission District 3 seat in 2008, and lost to incumbent Gary C. Wheeler.Parris has served as president on several local committees and organizations including Indian River County Little League, Fighting Indians Football Booster Club, Fighting Indians Baseball Booster Club, the March of Dimes Fundraising Committee, and was former Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 515, and Disctrict Chairman for Boy Scouts of America Indian River District of the Gulf Stream Council. Parris has also served as a deacon at
First Baptist Church of Vero Beach .Parris served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 6 years. He is an Eagle Scout
Currently, Parris is employed as a citrus and produce broker with Fulford Citrus. He also voices the football and basketball games for the Vero Beach High School Fighting Inidans on Christian FM (WSCF 91.9 FM Vero Beach, 96.3 FM Port St. Lucie) with his sons G.T. and Matt. Gary and his son, Matt, are also announcers for the University of Central Florida Golden Knights football team.
