Alexander Lawton Mackall

Alexander Lawton Mackall (Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1888 — West New Brighton, Staten Island, New York, 1968) was an author, journalist and gastronomy expert and critic. Was the editor of several New York magazines and the author of the renowned restaurant guide "Knife and Fork in New York" (1948), a precursor of the Zagat's Survey. He had a strong connection to the Portuguese culture, being made official of the Ordem de Cristo, a Portuguese honorific order that distinguishes personalities relevant in the field of culture. Through the "The Lawton Mackall Foundation", incorporated in New York, he instituted a monetary prize to be awarded to the best students of a selected set of high schools in Portugal.
