It takes place in the not so distant future, and is about a girl, Kayla Reed, who has to get a bar code tattoo as an ID, but suspects that there is something politically wrong with the tattoo. In 2005, theAmerican Library Association named it as a Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers. The Nevada Library Association nominated the novel as a 2007 Best Young Adult Fiction. The Bar Code Tattoo is translated into German and in 2007 was nominated for the prestigious Jugendliteraturpreis given by the Federal Republic of Germany. In a review in May 2005, Kliatt, the online library review called it,"a great book."Plot summary
Kayla Marie Reed is about to turn seventeen, the age when she can get her
bar code tattoo. However, her father's recent suicide triggered an expanding suspicion of the tattoos. The tattoo, or "'too" as often referred to in the book, contains information such as one's drivers license, medical records, age, and much more. Immediately before her mother's death, she revealed dire information to her daughter about unknown happenings at the hospitals and revealed other data stored in the tattoo. After it becomes illegal not to wear the "too", Kayla finds a small group of people who are on her side, and together they work to find out what is going on with the barcode and Global-1, the company which seeks to control the world.Books in Series
