John de Lancie (oboist)

Early life

John de Lancie was born in Berkeley, California in 1921.

Career

John de Lancie met Richard Strauss during de Lancie's tour of duty as a soldier in Europe at the end of World War II. At the urging of de Lancie, Strauss composed his Oboe Concerto.

De Lancie commissioned a piece for oboe by the composer Jean Françaix, a piece that translates into English as "The Flower Clock."

He also taught at Curtis Institute of Music and served as its director from 1977 to 1985. At his death, de Lancie was one of the few remaining students of the legendary Marcel Tabuteau of Curtis.

Death

He died in Walnut Creek, California in 2002, at the age of 80.

Family

His son is the actor John de Lancie.
