Huawaizhidi

Huawaizhidi

Huawaizhidi ( _zh. 化外之地) is a collective term for the land outward of Chinese culture, which literally means "outer fringe of Chinese civilization". "Hua" ( _zh. 化) is from Chinese character for culture ( _zh. 文化). The people in this area were called "Huawaizhimin" ( _zh. 化外之民), means "uncivilized people".

These two words are sometime used together in Chinese documents as " _zh. 化外之地、化外之民", mean "uncivilized people in outer fringes of civilization".
