Uday Shankar (
December 8 ,1900 –September 26 ,1977 ) ( _bn. উদয় শংকর) was a world renowned classical dancer andchoreographer fromIndia .Born in
Udaipur, Rajasthan to a Bengali family with origins in Narail (in modern-dayBangladesh ), he was trained in the art inBombay . He later studied at theRoyal College of Art inLondon and danced along withballerina Anna Pavlova . He created ballets based on Hindu themes likeRadha -Krishna , Hindu weddings and other oriental themes for Anna. During the 1930s, Uday toured through thewestern world along with his own troupe. His adaptation of western theatrical techniques to Indian dance made his art hugely popular both in India and the West, while his brother Ravi Shankar helped popularizeIndian classical music in the West.He had married Amala Shankar and they had a son
Ananda Shankar and a daughterMamata Shankar . While Ananda Shankar was a musician and music composer who trained with Dr.Lalmani Misra rather than his uncle, Ravi Shankar, Mamata Shankar is a dancer like her parents and is also a noted actress, working in films bySatyajit Ray andMrinal Sen . Uday Shankar also made a film on dance entitled "Kalpana".He established a dance center at
Almora , on the foothills of theHimalayas , and invitedShankaran Nambudirei forKathakali ,Kandappa Pillai forBharatanatyam ,Amobi Singh forManipuri andUstad Allauddin Khan for music.Uday was awarded "
Padma Vibhushan " by theGovernment of India and the "Desikottama " by theVisva-Bharati University .ources
