history= March 1865 to October 1926"The English Mechanic" (or "The English Mechanic and World of Science" to give its full title) was a
popular-science newspaper , published weekly from1865 to1926 , generally consisting of 24 pages. It should be noted that the title of "newspaper" is somewhat inaccurate, as usually over half of a typical issue was given over to readers' letters and answers to queries. It was aimed at people interested in inventions and gadgets and new discoveries in science, technology and mathematics."The English Mechanic" popularized amateur telescope construction in the UK and later in the USA after the
Reverend Frederick William Archdall Ellison 's articles on the subject were reprinted inScientific American . A letter published in the newspaper also led to the formation of theBritish Astronomical Association . A regularchess column was also included, written byJames Pierce .References
