Whitsett, Pennsylvania is a small town located about 30 miles (50km) south of Pittsburgh. The population is approximately 200. It was founded in 1845 by Ralph Whitsett. He and his family built a large red brick house which still stands today. The community is made up of “company” houses that were built for workers that worked in a large coalmine located nearby, the mine was Banning #4¹. Most of the houses were ½ houses built to accommodate two families. The mine has been closed for several years and most of the houses have been renovated and turned into single family dwellings.

Whitsett has a bottom and top patch. The bottom patch is where the white people of the community live and the top patch is made up of mostly African-Americans. Though the town has the two separate patches, there are no problems with regards to race. There are also houses located on River Road that runs along the Youghiogheny River.

The Youghiogheny River Trail runs through Whitsett and there is space for parking and trail access located at the park. There is also a basketball court, baseball field and pavilions near the trail access. The trail was built on the old lines of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroad.
