Zhidan was formerly known as Bao'an (
Wade-Giles : Pao An) county. The site derives its historical significance from having temporarily served as the capital ofcommunist China in the midst of China's transition-upheaval period during which communist forces battled the Chinese nationalistGMD (WG: KMT) government. From early July1936 to January1937 Bao'an was the site of theCommunist Party of China 's (CPC)Central Committee headquarters, as well as that of theCommunist military forces . It was replaced byYan'an (WG: Yenan). Zhidan County takes its name fromLiu Zhidan , militarystrategist and high-ranking leader of theChinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army who died fighting for thecommunist side in1935 .
