Bao'an bears historical significance as it temporarily served as the capital of Communist-controlled China during the
Chinese Civil War of the 1930s, in which Communist forces battled theRepublic of China regime under the Chinese Nationalists (Kuomintang /Guomindang). From early July 1936 to January 1937 Bao'an was the site of theCommunist Party of China 'sCentral Committee headquarters and of that of the Communist military forces, thePeople's Liberation Army .In 1937 Bao'an was replaced in both roles by
Yan'an (WG: "Yenan")--also in Shaanxi Province--the most significant and renowned Chinese Communist outpost, which served as Communist capital until 1947.Name
