At the beginning of the movie you hear Clive telling that in the winter of 1926 his father
Thomas Jefferson Thornton II met two guys named Livengood and Marley who were looking for gold.After a while they found something, well they found a lot.And 21 years later in 1947 they found his body, what was left of it, because the wolves ate almost everything.They never found livengood either but Marley was a normal man, and if anyone asked him about the gold Marley just smiled.In order to get revenge Clive tries to stop Marley's grandson (Kevin Manley) from winning the race, so he can claim the land his grandfather left him and sell it (because it is worth millions of dollars.)abotages

When Thornton and Carter have stolen the gold they end up in an old barn.This barn explodes because when Marley throws a knife at Thornton the knife hits a barrel filled with 1203 and when Thornton shoots at Marley, the bullet hits the 1203 and the barn explodes.When the barn explodes the gold is still inside, and the explosion causes a rain of gold.When this is over Carter and Thornton get arrested.
