The Journal of Short Film

The Journal of Short Film

The Journal of Short Film is a quarterly DVD publication of peer-reviewed short films of all genres. Started in 2005, its creators sought to fill a gaping hole in film distribution and create a new venue for short films. The journal is modeled on the literary journal, complete with an editorial board made up of filmmakers.

Periodically, the journal hosts guest editors of note, including Sam Green, Deborah Stratman, and Lucy Raven. In October 2007, the journal collaborated with WITNESS on a collection of documentaries highlighting human rights around the world. This collaboration became Volume 9, and the journal committed half of the proceeds to the organization.

The journal maintains an open and free submissions process. Its publisher, Karl Mechem, has previously stated that the journal is committed to independent and underrepresented work and the democratization of the film world. [http://www.mediarights.org/news/2005/12/12/new_distribution_models_the_journal_of_short_film.php] Mechem first gained film experience while working on "The Battle of Algiers" and since has been committed to democracy campaigns and media reform.
