John Tyler High School is a public, co-educational secondary school in Tyler, Texas. It is part of the Tyler Independent School District and serves 9th through 12th grade. It is named for John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States.

Demographics

As of the 2006-2007 school year, the student population consisted of
*46.2% African American
*46.0% Hispanic
*7.2% White (Non-Hispanic)
*0.4% Asian/Pacific Islander
*0.1% American Indian

Athletics

John Tyler High is known for its competitive football program. The J.T. Lions have won two state championships: 1973 under coach Corky Nelson, and in 1994 under coach Allen Wilson.

In a 1994 game against Plano East, they gave up a 24 point lead (41-17) in the final three minutes; but still won the game 48-44 on a kickoff return after East had taken the lead. This game won an Espy Award for Showstopper Performance.

Tyler High School's (Tyler High went on to be renamed John Tyler High) state championship in 1930 under coach George Foltz is credited to John Tyler.
