Born in
London , Patel received a B.A in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, fromOxford , a Masters Degree from theLondon School of Economics and gained his PhD in Development Sociology fromCornell university in 2002. He has been a visiting scholar atYale and theUniversity of California, Berkeley . As part of his academic training, Patel worked at theWorld Bank ,World Trade Organization and theUnited Nations . He has since become an outspoken and noted critic of all of these organizations, and has been teargassed on four continents protesting against his former employers.Fact|date=October 2008 Patel was one of many organizers in the 1999 protests in downtownSeattle , WA, and has organized in support ofFood sovereignty . More recently he has lived and worked extensively inZimbabwe and inSouth Africa .
