Jacob Palis, Jr. (b.
15 March 1940 inUberaba ,Brazil ) is a Brazilianmathematician of international recognition. Since1973 he has held a permanent position as professor atInstituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada inRio de Janeiro , Brazil. He was director of the same institute from1993 until2003 . He was Secretary-General of theThird World Academy of Sciences from2004 to2006 , and elected its President in 2006 [http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~twas/publ/2006-09-04_Palis.html] .He studied under
Stephen Smale atUniversity of California, Berkeley , and his1968 thesis was entitled "On Morse-SmaleDiffeomorphism s". Palis himself has advised more than fortyPh.D. students so far from more than ten countries.Palis has received numerous medals and decoration. He is a foreign member of several academies of sciences, including the
