Klaus Töpfer (born
29 July 1938 in Waldenburg (Wałbrzych),Poland (then GermanSilesia )) is a German politician (CDU) and environmental politics expert. From1998 to2006 he was executive director of theUnited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).Töpfer studied
economics inMainz ,Frankfurt andMünster . In1968 he earned his doctorate at theUniversity of Münster . After functioning as government official, professor and adviser on development politics he became minister for the Environment and Health in the regional government ofRhineland-Palatinate in1985 . In1987 Töpfer became German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety underChancellor Helmut Kohl . From1994 to1998 he served as Federal Minister for Regional Planning, Civil Engineering and Urban Development. He was member of theBundestag from1990 to1998 and member of the Steering Committee of the CDU from1992 to1998 .In
1998 Töpfer was appointed Under Secretary General of theUnited Nations , General director of the United Nations office inNairobi and Executive Director of theUnited Nations Environment Programme . In June2006 he was succeeded in this office byAchim Steiner . As director of UNEP, he has had a key role in gauging and attempting to remedy the environmental costs of the 2004 Asian tsunami.External links
