- Pieter van Lint
Pieter van Lint (1609—1690) was a
Flemish Baroque painter , active inAntwerp andItaly , who painted both religious subjects andgenre scenes .He was born at Antwerp. After studying under
Artus Wolffort , Van Lint become a master in theGuild of St. Luke in 1633. In that same year he traveled toRome where he remained until 1640. While there he worked for CardinalDomenico Ginnasio ,Bishop of Ostia , who employed him to decorate the cathedral in that city. Van Lint also frescoed the Cibo family chapel inSanta Maria del Popolo with theLegend of the True Cross . In addition to religious commissions, the artist painted numerous small genre scenes in the style of theBamboccianti .Van Lint's paintings after returning to Antwerp—where he remained for the rest of his career— demonstrate a classicist style influenced by his Roman stay. Many of his later works were religious paintings, such as the "
Marriage of the Virgin " (1640) inAntwerp Cathedral . Besides larger paintings, his small-scale devotional paintings also found a market inSpain and Spanish colonies in America. Students includePieter Ijkens andGodfried Maes .References
