History
The snack was invented after the Second World War. Production moved to a factory in Belleville, Ontario in 1956 after fire destroyed the original plant in Tweed, Ontario[1]. The snack has been produced in the same facility ever since and continues at present to be sold across Canada. In a recent taste test conducted over the internet social networking site Facebook, Hawkin's Cheezies won the popular vote, but due to the judging process , was deemed a second place ranking to the challenger: Cheetos Puffs[citation needed].
Competition
Old Dutch Foods produced two similar products in the 1970s, cheese flavoured "Crunchies" and barbecue flavoured. The latter were discontinued and Old Dutch continues to produce the cheese-flavoured Crunchies in two flavours.[2]
Name
The name Cheezies has become a Genericized trademark name in common usage in Canada for any kind of cheese snack such as Cheetos.
