Calhoun High School is located in Port Lavaca, Texas. A part of the Calhoun County Independent School District, Calhoun High School is named after U. S. Senator and the seventh Vice President John C. Calhoun, an infamous slave owner who opposed both abolitionism and attempts to limit the expansion of slavery into the western territories.

The school was built in the 1960s because the former high school, what is now Travis Middle School, was too small. It is now the home of the Fighting Sandcrabs.

ATHLETICS

A New Beginning: The Whitaker Era and Football

Pre-Whitaker Era, the Sandcrabs were infamous for being one of the worst teams in Texas football, dating back to 1961 when they lost the State Game. They held a 44 year playoff drought. Then Fate smiled upon Port Lavaca and Richard Whitaker decided to grace CHS with his magnificent presence during the 2006 Football Season. Whitaker accepted the position as the Calhoun Athletic Director and Head Football Coach then immediately imposed a grueling, rigorous athletic program, previously unknown to the Sandcrabs. That season the Sandcrabs shocked the citizens of Calhoun County, as well as every other high school football fan in the great state of Texas, by posting an impressive 9-3 record. Coach Whitaker and Quarterback Tyler McAfee led the Sandcrabs to a District and Bi-Distict championship. They pulverized Uvalde High school in their first round playoff game at the Alamodome with an amazing score which broke the Alamodome record for hightest total points scored between two teams in the Alamodome. The Sandcrabs then lost to the EdCOUCH ELSA Hornets at A&M at Kingsville.----2007 Football SeasonWhen many of the senior players graduated (including Tyler McAfee), not much was expected from the 2007 Sandcrabs. However this senior group proved the critics wrong. Led by seniors Armando Verber and Jackson Gayle, the Sandcrabs continued their dominace from an offensive standpoint. Junior Quarterback James Ezzell dominated along with offensive backs Xavier Archangel and Sterling Jones.The Fighting Sandcrabs football team posted yet again another 9-3 record.----2008 Football SeasonSeason 3 of the Whitaker Era was brought in with a BANG when renowned sports writer Dan Campbell announced, to the delight of Port Lavacians, that the Sandcrabs were ranked 7 for Texas 4A. ----Football Future for the SandcrabsIt has been rumored for the past few years that Sandcrab Stadium will be rededicated. It will be renamed "Whitaker Stadium" in appreciation for the glory and pride he has brought to the small town of Port Lavaca.
