McNamara studied at the Marquette University. He holds a post-graduate diploma in Business Studies from University College Dublin (UCD). McNamara worked as a reporter and wrote for The Irish Times and the Irish Examiner.
His first commentary was on the 1997 FA Cup Final for Irish national radio. His first television commentary was for TV3 in 1998 for the Republic of Ireland vs. Yugoslavia match.
