Kerry North is a constituency represented by three Teachtaí Dála (TDs) in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas. As of 2005, the constituency has an electorate of 52,476. The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote. The constituency is located in the northern half of County Kerry, taking in Tralee, Listowel, Tarbert, Ballybunion and Castleisland.

It was established by the Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935 [http://193.178.1.79/1935/en/act/pub/0005/gen_1.html] when the former Kerry constituency was divided into Kerry North and Kerry South. It was first used in the 1937 General election electing Members of the 9th Dáil. At the next election it will be replaced by a new constituency called Kerry North-West Limerick. [ [http://www.constituency-commission.ie/docs%5Ccon2007.pdf Constituency Commission report, p5] ]

One of the most high profile TDs in the constituency was the former leader of the Labour Party, Dick Spring. He served the constituency for over twenty years before losing his seat to Sinn Féin's Martin Ferris at the 2002 general election. The Fine Gael TD, Jimmy Deenihan, is a former footballer with the county.

Territory

Distinctly different from the more mountainous areas of south and east Kerry, North Kerry is more agricultural but not as well known as a tourist destination as South Kerry.

Generally located between the Shannon Estuary and the Sleibh Mish Mountains; Tralee, Listowel, Castleisland and Tarbert are some of the significant towns and villages. Geologically, the area is generally flat and gave rise to a good agricultural industry.
