C. M. Naim (Choudhary Mohammad Naim, born 3 June 1936) is an American writer, scholar, critic, translator and academician of
India n origin. Naim's area of research isUrdu language and literature, as well as South Asian studies. He is the founding editor of the journals [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/books/annualofurdustudies/ "Annual of Urdu Studies"] and [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/books/mahfil/ "Mahfil"] (now "Journal of South Asian Literature"), and author of the definitive textbook for Urdu pedagogy in English.Naim was born in
Barabanki , India, and educated atLucknow University, Central Institute of Languages, Poona, and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1962, he joined the faculty of the [http://southasia.uchicago.edu/about.htm Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations] at theUniversity of Chicago and during the next 40 years, became full professor and served as chairman of the department. Naim is currently professor emeritus at the University of Chicago.
