Honesty box

Honesty box

An honesty box is a method of charging an admission or car parking fee which relies upon the individual visitor to pay at an unattended box. Tickets are not issued and such sites are usually un-manned. The name derives from the reliance on the honesty of the visitor to pay before proceeding to visit a historical site or park in a designated area.

Such boxes are typically used at historical sites or rural car parks in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland where visitor numbers are not high enough that a manned presence would bring positive return on investment.
